MANILA, Philippines — The active low pressure area east of northern Luzon intensified Wednesday into a tropical depression named “Dodong” that is expected to further intensity within the next 6 to 12 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Dodong was tracked 290 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes late Wednesday morning and was packing maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) as it traveled northwest at 19 kph.

Tropical storm “Chedeng” (international codename Pabuk), on the other hand, has left southern Taiwan and is heading towards mainland China.

Public storm warning signal No. 1, meaning winds of from 30 to 60 kph remained hoisted over Batanes and the Babuyan islands.

PAGASA said Dodong would continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing rains over Luzon, particularly the island’s western section.

People in low lying areas were advised to take precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides while those living in coastal areas under signal No. 1 have been alerted against large waves.
