(UPDATE 2) La Union municipal treasurer slain
DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines — The treasurer of Bauang, La Union, was shot and killed by a lone gunman in front of her house in that town on Monday, police said.
Superintendent Pedro Ubaldo, Bauang police chief, said Felicidad Picar was on her way to the town hall at 8 a.m. when the gunman, Rogelio Orduna, attacked her along the national highway in Barangay (village) Santiago.
Picar died while being taken to a hospital in Bauang.
Ubaldo said some residents tried to chase and arrest Orduna but were
stopped by the suspect who brandished his gun and threatened to shoot them.
Police arrested Orduna in Barangay Urayong, also in Bauang, more than an hour later. They seized from him a .45 caliber pistol.
Ubaldo said Orduna was involved in several criminal cases in the town and has outstanding warrants of arrest.
Superintendent Sterling Blanco, intelligence officer of the La Union provincial police, said they are not discounting the possibility the crime was politically motivated.
Blanco said Picar, chair of the municipal board of canvassers in Bauang during the last elections, received death threats during the election period.
He said a group of men fired at Picar’s house just before the May 14 elections.
