MANILA, Philippines — Administration candidate Juan Miguel Zubiri was officially proclaimed the 12th winner of the May 14 senatorial elections by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), sitting as National Board of Canvassers, shortly before noon Saturday.
The proclamation came a day after the Supreme Court denied the petition of defeated Genuine Opposition candidate Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III seeking a temporary restraining order.
The final tally showed Zubiri leading by some 18,000 votes over Pimentel.
After his proclamation, Zubiri thanked those who voted for him, making special mention to his “friends from Visayas and Mindanao” and calling for unity.
“Sana po sama-sama tayo, at kailangan trabaho na po [I hope we can be united because we already need to work already],” he said.
Before going to the Comelec for his proclamation, Zubiri heard a thanksgiving mass at the nearby Manila Cathedral, Nica Sotera, a member of his staff, said in a phone interview.
