CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Three inmates were shot dead and three others were injured after breaking out of the Lumbia city jail Thursday afternoon.
Another three inmates were recaptured.
The jail is about two kilometers from the Cagayan de Oro City airport.
Jail warden Alejandro Almazin told reporters the nine prisoners who joined the jailbreak belonged to the Batang Mindanao 29 (BM 29) and Batman 357 gangs, and faced charges ranging from kidnapping to murder.
Members of the Police’s City Mobile Group (CMG) and jail personnel hunted down the escapees and killed Rudy Jumaynon, Crisanto Diomante and Jerry Jumaynon.
The three wounded escapees were identified as Josue Sumilia, Ricky Jumaynon, and Rogelio Paraguya.
Paraguya, a Batman 357 gang member, was reported to have grabbed an Armalite rifle from one of the jail guards during the jailbreak. He was shot by pursuing Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel.
The prisoners climbed a tower near the old BJMP building to make it out of the jail.
In 2005, about 50 inmates escaped from the jail.
